From the flower to the fruit

What many people do not know that the fruit you already have; tasted or eaten early, comes from the flower of the pineapple plant. Each fluorescence is composed of 100 to 200 small purple flowers. Each of these flowers, once completed its life cycle, turns into a part of the fruit of the pineapple. Every flower origin to a part of pentagonal shape of the pineapple.

Fruit in one year

It takes almost a year to grow a single fruit !!! From the moment the plant is planted in the ground, it takes 12-13 months to grow your ripe pineapple at the right point, ready to be eaten. We at My Dream Fruit prefer to leave the fruit the most. possible on the plant, so that it can become the most; rich possibilile of all the minerals and vitamins, in particular vitamin C.

We are not saying that green pineapples are less good. To memorize options the difference is felt in taste, in color and in perfume. More the fruit is colored, more you will have a feeling of breathing "the scent of the jungle" of Costa Rica, in a room in your home. Each plant usually produces only one fruit in its life cycle, only to be replaced by another young plant. In some large plantations they yield up to a maximum of 3 times.

Be living

Well yes, it's pineapple a living being! In fact, he breathes and lives. After its collection from the plant, the fruit absorbs oxygen and releases carbon dioxide and ethylene in small quantities. It is a non-climacteric fruit. It means that after harvesting it does not continue to ripen, like other fruits (eg banana and avocado). The cells of the fruit die slowly. It is important to keep the fruit at a temperature of 7.2-7.5 ° C from the collection to the table, to ensure the best preservation.

In Costa Rica, most of the land used for pineapple cultivation was virgin rainforest 30 years ago. The original forest in the 80s and 90s suffered serious damage due to intensive agriculture. Today for the situation is changed radically. Costa Rica a country of which the third part of the surface is covered by national parks and protected rainforests. You can not break down woodland.

The unique possibility; for companies & egrave; to buy land previously used for pastoral use and to allocate them to the plantations. Costa Rica defined a green oasis just for the culture of respect for the forest and its forms of life. A country, even if small, where it is; achieved a healthy balance between commercial interests and the preservation of nature.

But let's get to the point. Where do MyDream Fruit pineapples grow? In the fertile valley where the city stands; of Pital, canton of San Carlos, not far from the capital San Jos in Costa Rica.

It's a very fertile volcanic soil rich in natural nutrients; in more, with the right properties; climates that best support the formation of the fruit, we are able to provide you with the best of Costa Rica. All around the valley are some of the most volcanoes; Costa Rica Highs: The Volcano and the Arenal Volcano.

As ...

The plantations from which our fruits derive cover an area of about 860 hectares. Of these, 60 hectares are destined to the cultivation of organic pineapple, fruit that will come and go; soon on the markets, always with the name My Dream Fruit.

In each plantation, between 50 and 60 thousand plants are planted per hectare. The terrain is with slopes of up to 5% and well draining. Each plant derives from what is referred to as son or hijo in Spanish. The plant in fact produces new buds from the base of the plant and the stem from which the fruit grows, which are then detached from the original plant and planted. Once the fruit is harvested, leave the plant to rest for a few days and then cut approximately 1/3 of the height of the leaves horizontally. It is stimulated the growth of the "hijos". After one month from this operation, the buds, which are now small plants, are removed manually.

Once collected, wash and carefully select, to have only hijos healthy, which will produce the best fruits. The hijos grown from the base of the plant, as the
hijos that grow from the stem tend to bloom naturally. We will review more; forward on the theme of flowering.

A third way to reproduce a plant, or cut the crown of the fruit (the tuft). The crown alone is planted in the ground, and it is assisted first to the deposition of the roots, then to the growth of the plant! This process for & ograve; it is rarely used in plantations, as the plant would take too much time to grow.

Leaves are the means that allows the plant to collect water and nutrients through fertilizers. The vertical roots (up to 15cm) allow the plant to withstand long periods of drought. The horizontal roots allow to absorb the nutrients.

Following the hand-made plant of the hijos one by one, you have to wait about 30 weeks. It is at this point that the fluorescence is artificially induced. The pineapple plant possesses the particular property; to flourish "on command". If the plant were left to grow without treatment, the plants would flourish randomly with different timing from one another and the management of the plantation would become complicated or impossible from a commercial point of view. About 30 weeks after manual sowing, a harmless fertilizer is applied to consumers.

This has the property to start the flowering process of the plant. Fertilizing at the same time a certain planting surface, all the plants of that surface will bloom in the same period and will produce a ripe fruit in the same period of time. After a few days of fertilization, the flower begins to develop.

Fertilization should take about 20-24 weeks, depending on the time of year, to have the fruit ripe and ready to harvest. The fertilizer is very volatile and the application is only done at dawn. Fertilizers are also applied in order to provide the appropriate nutrient values to plants: in particular copper contributes to color, calcium by weight.

In a company of 800 hectares, about 300 people work in the fields and 50-100 people in the fruit selection and packaging plant. The working conditions in the fields are not easy, the workers work with their back bent most of the time and the sun also reaches 36 ° C. The collection is done when it is done; established that the fruit & egrave; mature. The following parameters are established: brix level, ie the sugar content present in the fruit, external and internal color. Curiosity: a pineapple is considered ripe when the leaf is thicker; central of the tuft comes off effortlessly.

Our fruits My Dream Fruit traveling by sea contain an average brix of 15%. Click here to make a comparison with the brix of other fruit. The pineapple "Super Sweet", which travels by air, has a brix of 16 & deg; or more. Brix comparison table.

Organic pineapple

The future biological! More and more; consumers realize that physical and mental well-being also derives from a conscious consumption of carefully selected and carefully grown products. We are part and on the side of nature. How much more? we manage to live naturally, more and more; our psycho-physical and mental well-being increases. At this reference, in organic farming there is zero use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. 100% natural products are used.

Nature thanks! The waters of the subsoil are not contaminated and the soil remains fertile for more. time compared to traditional agriculture.

Organic pineapple plantation. The black plastic serves to protect the roots from fertilizer residues from neighboring plantations and prevents weeds from growing. The pesticides used are the following:

Limonene oil of natural origin, spicy chilli powder, garlic powder, shredded mustard seeds.

As for fertilizers, here are some of the most important; used: animal dry blood and fish trimming and fish waste. These natural products are rich in minerals and highly nutritious for plants. They derive from industrial processing waste but are preserved and treated in a natural way, without the addition of chemical components.

It takes about 1 or 2 months more; to grow a biological fruit. Moreover, 20% of the plants planted in the plantation, waste away. Plantation management & egrave; pi & ugrave; complicated because the plants bloom with different timing. Flowering occurs naturally, and follows the life cycle of the plant.

Green thumb

Collect your fresh pineapple, with the brand of your house? It will take a bit 'of time, but certainly a success!

Too many online videos spread the easy cultivation of this plant. Here are some tricks to follow for a result from a Dream.

Take the crown (the tuft) of the plant with one hand. With the other hand, hold the fruit firmly. Turn and at the same time pull the tuft, as if I wanted to rip it off. In fact this is what we want to do.

Keep the tuft for 5-7 days in a dry place and in the dark, away from any light. This process causes the tuft to dry out.

Take a well-porous clay pot, put the gravel at the base, so as to fill the bottom of the pot about 2-3 cm. Then take some garden soil and if possible mix it with a part of organic material deriving from compost (finely chopped vegetable scraps). Plant the tuft and bathe once a week.

Ensure that the soil is well draining, otherwise the roots will rot. After about a year, we can; make the plant bloom with the application of sodium carbonate, or by enclosing the plant with a lot of plating for one night. Apples are placed inside the bag. The release of ethylene by apples, forzer & agrave; the plant to bloom.
